    Description

The Swiss company that was to become Caran D'Ache was founded in Geneva in 1915. The story behind the 1924 name change is an unusual one involving Turkish, Russian and a French political cartoonist. The company made pencils, specifically excellent watercolour pencils used by fine artists. They made related products for artists and students too but didn't make their first ballpoint until 1951. Their first fountain pen came to market in 1970 and was called the Madison. The pen for sale here is a sterling silver Madison from the mid 1970's and features the distinctive "sword" clip of their early pens.
I bought the pen new when I got my first real job. It was my first 'luxury' pen and I used it extensively for a few years until I started acquiring other new and vintage pens. The Madison was put into storage in a pen case where it sat untouched for about 40 years. When I pulled it out recently the silver was black with oxidation so I had to clean it a bit for the photos. It will look better with a proper cleaning but it does have signs of use, including the hairline scratches metal pens get when handled as well as a couple of dings. I've tried to show them in the photos.
The barrel is marked Caran D'Ache Swiss near the cap. The original piston filler is included. The white gold nib is marked 14k - 585, Caran D'Ache, M. There is a number near the threads of the nib section (21597). That's a strange place for a serial number but I've checked and it's not a part number. The slip cap is secure and it posts well, but it has left a few scratches where it slides onto the nib section. The pen fills and writes very well with good flow and smoothness.
