Vintage 1920s-30s LITTLE HOSTESS Toy Lustre Ware China Tea Set & Dishes Made in Japan
A pity that the box isn't in better shape, but at least it is still with this adorable set. Made in Japan, this collection of play dishes is called 'Little Hostess Set' and is almost complete as it is missing a cup. There are six cake plates, 5 cups & saucers (1 additional saucer), a sauce boat, oblong casserole with lid, oblong serving plate, teapot with sugar bowl & creamer. A total of 23 pieces, not including lids.
As far as dating this set, there are only clues as there is no printed date. The wonderful graphics on the box are very 1920s-30s with even an Airship (Blimp) pictured along with clowns, elephants, ducks & dishes. It is also a Christmas box as there are holly leaves & berries. The dishes themselves with their floral patterns have kind of an Art Deco flare.
Some dimensions are, cake plates 3-3/4" diameter, tea pot 3-1/2" tall x 4-1/2" wide, casserole 3" tall x 5" wide, sauce or gravy boat 4-1/2" long x 2" tall, cups 2-1/4" diameter x 1-1/4" tall, saucers 3-1/4" diameter. Weight for the set in the box is 3 pounds 5 ounces. The condition is very good with one small chip on the casserole rim and the missing cup as previously mentioned. The box is in very used condition with its detached and bent cover, lots of abrasions and tears.
